Statement

I have always been intrigued with portraiture.  What is it about the human face that fascinates me?  Van Gogh once stated “I would sooner paint eyes than cathedrals…to my mind, a person’s soul is more interesting”.  Upon close and concentrated observation we are able to catch a glimpse of what lies beneath the surface and try to capture the essence of the individual through the tools of drawing or painting.  There is a certain intimacy in the connection that develops between Artist and Subject and a joy in unraveling the mystery which has inspired Artists for centuries.  In our reaction and interpretation, we often unconsciously and unexpectedly reveal a part of ourselves.  I hope that my respect for my subjects informs my pieces with the passion and reverence I feel.
