New Orleans Drawing Group (NODG) was founded in 2005 by New Orleans artist Sandra Burshell, who wanted to keep her in-person drawing group together through the challenge of Covid-19. The group, first organized after Hurricane Katrina, not only stayed together, but grew via Zoom to include artists from across the country and overseas. Through the technology of Zoom, the sessions feature models who can be anywhere in the world, posing from the intimate settings of their own homes.
Arabi Visual Arts is an umbrella group for multiple operations and is located in the St. Claude Arts Building, which is part of the St. Claude Arts Campus located in the Arabi Arts District. Arabi is a small, historic, artsy town located in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. Arabi is approximately a ten minute drive from the New Orleans French Quarter. The physical exhibition will be held in the Arabi Visual Arts Gallery (a 43' X 27' space). In addition, Arabi Visual Arts operates a small gallery for the owner's photography, and two other galleries in the same building. In addition to these four spaces, there are 8 other studios in the St. Claude Arts Building.
Every artist is assured that at least one of their submitted works will be accepted into the physical exhibition, UNLESS they have indicated the submittal for Web Gallery only.
The selection process is determined by a variety of factors listed below as assessed by the Jury of Selection.
“It is so fitting that Barbara Genco is the Juror of Selection for our first New Orleans Drawing Group Exhibition at Arabi Visual Arts Gallery. Not only has Barbara been very active in the arts, publishing, and as a book-reviewer, she has been one with the late Bill Creevy, master artist and honoree of our December, 2020 New Orleans Drawing Session, which raised funds for creation of the Degas Pastel Society "Bill Creevy Memorial Award". - Sandra Burshell
Barbara A. Genco is a professional librarian, a library consultant, the retired Director of Collection Development (retired) at the Brooklyn Public Library and life-partner of New Orleans native, artist-writer, Bill Creevy PSA-MP, HFH /MFA LSU (1942-2020). Creevy was an irregular ‘regular’ at the “Fair Grinds (in-person) New Orleans Drawing Group”. He and Genco also drew online with NODG via Zoom until Bill’s passing due to COVID in the Autumn of 2020.
Barbara, from a family of accomplished artists, learned early on how to really “look”. She credits her life with Bill and her participation in the inaugural jury of the annual “Original Art” show at NYC’s Society of Illustrators for pushing her critical vocabulary and expanding her knowledge of art media. She has also served on the Ezra Jack Keats New Writers/New Illustrators Award Juries, the Horn Book/Boston Globe Award, and as a member of the American Library Association’s prestigious Newbery, Caldecott, Geisel, and Sibert Medal juries.
Named a Pastel Society of America (PSA) Friend of Pastel in 2022, Barbara continues to establish and fund-raise for awards in the pastel medium. She is Bill Creevy’s Art Executor.
Christopher Ryan is the owner of Arabi Visual Arts, an international conceptual photographer, a regular model for the New Orleans Drawing Group. Christopher has modeled regularly for drawing groups in Bangkok, Thailand and appeared as guest model throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe. Christopher has curated multiple group exhibitions at Arabi Visual Arts since its inception in 2021 as well as producing solo exhibitions throughout the USA and Thailand.
Christopher will curate the final physical installation of accepted works.
All work selected for display in the physical gallery will be judged. Winners will be announced during the opening reception on Saturday, October 14, 2023 and the awards distributed beginning Sunday October 15, 2023. Awards and prizes to be announced.
Note that in fairness to our members, Sandra Burshell and Darlene Bigus-Doheny have recused themselves from award eligibility.
We are extremely honored to have Carol Peebles, Founder and Director of the Blue Easel Club, New Orleans, as our judge of Awards. Through her Atelier classes and commissions, Carol Peebles continues the tradition of classical realist life drawing. Carol says “My Goal as a teacher is to help people slow down and study Nature with humility and fun.”
Carol holds the following distinctions:
